The new year has arrived filled with wonderful expectations for many things in your life. As the quote states: “Every day is a new beginning. Take a deep breath and start again.” Most of us don’t get enough exercise in our daily lives; now is the time to take that deep breath & one step forward to make exercise a health & wellness priority in your life. A few tips:
1. Move More. Think about what you do in your everyday life & move more. For example, while doing chores in your home, make a point to go up & down those stairs as many times as you can. Stand instead of sitting while you work. I can’t stand still, can you? If you work at a computer, be sure to get up & move every hour. When you have a break, don’t sit down, go for a walk, even if it’s only 5/10 minutes. Remember that 10,000 is the magic number of steps per day that you should aim for to maintain a healthy body. You will be surprised at how easy this is to achieve.
2. Start Slow. If you are just starting to exercise, don’t set unrealistic goals that will end in disappointment. For example, if your goal is to achieve 10,000 steps per day, start by finding out how many you actually do, then try to add 1,000 - 2,000 steps per week. Keep in mind that if you walk less than 5,000 steps per day you would be considered sedentary. Remember that the 10,000 steps you are aiming for don’t just mean walking, but also include all the movement you do throughout your day.
3. Make Exercise Fun to Keep You Motivated. Many say they don’t like to exercise, but if it is fun it is a lot easier to achieve. Pick something you love to do, like riding your bicycle, jogging, spinning, rebounding (I love to rebound, it is so much fun), dancing, hiking, swimming. You get the picture. If you don’t love it, you won’t do it for long. Exercise with a friend to make it social. It is more difficult to back out if you exercise with a friend.
tablet, watch, daily planner. Get a pedometer to record your steps. It’s a great little conscience. Keep a log to track your achievements.
